The inevitable nostalgia for a Nintendo-licensed sport game in which you control customizable avatars, combined with a promising multiplayer mode, has many fans hyped to return to the courts. While more sport game modes may be revealed closer to release or in post-launch updates, here are all the sports that are currently revealed for Nintendo Switch Sports.

Tennis

Just like Wii Sports, this anticipated new title will contain a tennis game mode. Utilizing the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con controller, players will be able to rally the ball with well-timed real world swings. With fans still actively playing Wii Sports 15 years after release, it is no wonder that many classic sports will be retained in the new release. With the ability to play one-on-one or as a duo playing against another, players can choose to play against friends locally, against AI, or against others online.

Chambara

Perhaps the least traditional of sports you would expect from this title, chambara will also be available to play on Nintendo Switch Sports at launch. Chambara appears to be a stationary duel-like game akin to fencing. Two opponents must attack the other and block incoming attacks, with the primary goal being to knock the opponent off their platform. Being a 1-vs-1 game, chambara is sure to be one of the most competitive modes.

Bowling

Another returning fan-favorite from Wii Sports, bowling makes a deserved return to this title. In this, players can play solo or with friends, putting spin on the ball and honing their craft to get as many points as possible via elusive and precise strikes.

Gamers can also go bowling in a variety of returning challenge modes, which sees the lane littered with increasingly intrusive obstacles to make the sport that much harder. If one thing will certainly return with this version of virtual bowling, it is that players will be grinding away to incrementally increase their high scores like they were on the Wii all those years ago.

Soccer

The game also introduces an interesting soccer mode, where players maneuver a giant soccer ball with the Joy-Con. Players have the ability to shoot and make diving headers, aiding them to score more goals than their opponent. Fans who are anticipating this will be equally for excited for Mario Strikers: Battle League, also announced at Nintendo Direct.

Additionally, physical copies of the game will come with a leg strap in which players can insert their Joy-Con, allowing players to partake in head-to-head penalty shootouts via real-world kicking.

Badminton

Another new addition, Nintendo Switch Sports also introduces badminton to players. Slightly more nuanced mechanics-wise in comparison to tennis, badminton necessitates more calculated swings to keep the shuttlecock in the air. Additionally, players will be able to utilize powerful spiking shots, which can be used effectively to catch their opponents off guard. Like tennis, this game mode can also be played head-to-head or as a duo.

Volleyball

Volleyball is the last sport that is currently known to be coming with the game’s launch. Using the Joy-Con, players will be serving, setting, bumping, and spiking their way to victory against opponents.

Like with all other sports, consistent wins and progress can unlock unique clothing and accessories for in-game avatars, incentivizing gamers to complete challenges and accolades to customize their in game avatar. With these improvements on a classic formula, Nintendo will hope that this title will reach the same height of success that Wii Sports did.

In addition to all of these aforementioned sports, the game will also launch with a Pro League mode, in which a player’s skill across different sports is tracked and displayed on local and global leaderboards This will provide a tangible platform for the games more consistently competitive players, who will surely be using the leaderboard to their full advantage.

Nintendo Switch Sports releases on April 29, 2022, for Nintendo Switch.
