The Echo Studio, Echo Show, Echo Plus, Echo Flex, and most Echo Dot speakers will be upgraded to support the new Matter protocol, according to The Verge. However, if you own the first-generation Echo speaker, the first-generation Echo Dot, or the Echo Tap, the Matter protocol will not be supported.

The Verge added that the tech giant told Matter developers that tools are coming to make Matter a reality.

Experts say that this type of certification system is exactly what the smart home industry needs, including compatibility across devices from different makers.

Once most smart home devices are certified under the Matter protocol, consumers will see more choices of devices and more overall control over their smart home experience.
